Scandal-plagued Hong Kong nursing home set to change its name and operator
Cambridge Nursing Home was rocked by scandal in May last year when elderly residents were made to wait naked on rooftop before taking a shower
A private home for the elderly in Tai Po which has been embroiled in a series of scandals over the mistreatment of elderly residents will change its name and the person who runs it, according to the Social Welfare Department.
The Cambridge Nursing Home in Wan Tau Street was exposed in May last year for leaving residents naked on a rooftop while they waited for a shower.
It will change its name to Forest Nursing Home (Tai Po) from July 1, according to a note posted outside the care home recently. Its operations, however, will remain unchanged.
“It seems quite common for care homes in Hong Kong to change their bosses for many different reasons,” said Dr Lam Ching-choi, chairman of the Elderly Commission.
“Who operates the care home is not an important issue. What is most important is to ensure the elderly receive quality care and can live in dignity,” he said.
According to Chinese-language newspaper Ming Pao, a nursing home board member, Irene Luk, told the media she planned to retire after selling the company. She denied she was doing this because it was losing business.
