Seven patients suffering from cancer, skin disease and depression were allegedly cheated out of HK$5 million in total by a Hong Kong beauty salon for giving them bogus treatments that they were told could cure them, police said on Wednesday.

The six women and one man were given oxygen-inhalation and infrared light “treatments” and also required to carry a magnet with them around the clock. They were asked to sign a declaration that they would not receive other treatment and take other medicine, acting chief inspector Cheng yat-pang of Wan Chai police district said.

He said the victims realised they were deceived after their health conditions did not improve, but got worse.

Two of the Hongkongers died, but officers did not reveal whether they died during the treatment period.

Police mounted a joint operation with officers from Department of Health and arrested 11 women in connection with the deception case when they raided two offices in Causeway Bay.

In the office of the beauty salon in Pennington Street, officers seized equipment, computers, documents and some controlled drug such as anaesthetic.
