A water sample from a flat in Shui Chuen O Estate, Sha Tin, has been found to contain more than three times the WHO’s safety levels of lead and nickel, according to Labour Party lawmaker Fernando Cheung Chiu-hung.

The flat, in Hei Chuen House, is one of the four blocks in the estate’s phase one that was completed in early 2015.

It had lead levels of 41 micrograms per litre and nickel at 230 mcg/l, while the World Health Organisation’s standard for lead and nickel are 10 mcg/l and 70 mcg/l respectively.

Out of the 25 overnight water samples taken for private laboratory tests, three samples taken from Hei Chuen House had excessive lead levels.

Cheung urged the government to thoroughly inspect the estate’s pipes and taps immediately and to provide bottled water and water trucks for residents.
