Announcement comes hours after Chinese University of Hong Kong suspended Wong, an associate dean, following his arrest on Monday
Hong Kong lawmaker William Wong Kam-fai has resigned from the Legislative Council and issued a fresh apology after his arrest over alleged drink-driving and a hit-and-run.
“I sincerely apologise for the distress caused to society and the Legislative Council by the recent traffic incident. To avoid impacting the operation of the Legislative Council, after careful consideration, I have decided to resign from all my positions in the Legislative Council with immediate effect,” he said.
He also sought the public’s understanding for being unable to comment further given that a police investigation was under way, adding that he would continue to strive for the community and the city in his future roles.
He is also a member of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, the country’s top political advisory body.
Legco president Starry Lee Wai-king said Wong had submitted his written notice to resign from his Legco seat on Friday.
