Hong Kong authorities have approved a 10 per cent increase in tram fares for most passengers, with adults paying HK$3.30 (42 US cents) for a ride from next month, while the operator is expected to soon launch a mobile application providing real-time arrival data.

The revised fares, which take effect on May 12, align with the 10 per cent increase that Hong Kong Tramways (HKT) proposed in February. Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu and the government’s key decision-making Executive Council endorsed the adjustments on Tuesday.

The government said the fare increase, which it called “acceptable”, was necessary for the operator to maintain stable operations.

“The government will continue to encourage and assist HKT to explore different revenue sources, especially to tie in with the concept of ‘tourism is everywhere’ to capitalise on new opportunities arising from the latest developments in the tourism landscape, while preserving its historical value,” a spokesman said.

The government also said the operator was expected to launch a new mobile application this quarter to provide service information, such as real-time tram arrival times.

Fares for adults and children aged 12 years and above will rise by 10 per cent to HK$3.30 from HK$3, while younger passengers will pay HK$1.60, an increase of 6.7 per cent from the current HK$1.50.
