Chinese University of Hong Kong fires vice-president who signed petition against governing body’s restructuring
- Eric Ng’s dismissal was announced by university’s governing council on Wednesday afternoon
- Council says it no longer has confidence in his ability and willingness to support the university’s work
The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) has fired its vice-president with immediate effect, saying it no longer had confidence in his ability and willingness to support the institution’s work.
The dismissal of Eric Ng Shu-pui was announced by university’s governing council on Wednesday afternoon, hours after it passed a resolution on the issue at a meeting.
Ng, who signed a petition against the council’s restructuring proposed by three lawmakers and was accused of sending out a meeting agenda without the chairman’s consent, was vice-president of administration and the university’s secretary.
Ng expressed “extreme regret” about the decision, saying he was told at around 2pm and was not given a chance to respond to the allegations during an investigation.
“I am extremely shocked, indignant and sad, my feelings are beyond words, I must clarify some facts,” Ng said on Wednesday night.
He said that during his 34 years of service as an university administrator, including 16 years at CUHK, he had abided by the rules and performed his duties diligently.
He said he would reserve the right to take legal action against council members and others over “groundless and serious slander” against him.
