The city’s Victoria Park is ready to be in full bloom on Friday as the annual Hong Kong Flower Show showcases a sea of snapdragons to charm visitors and defy chilly temperatures.

More than 350,000 flowers including 60,000 pots of snapdragons were to be exhibited across the park as organisers guaranteed this year’s featured flowers could “thrive well in cold weather”.

An estimated half a million people were expected to stop by. The event looked to offer a rich showcase of potted plants, floral arrangements and landscape displays by organisations from more than 17 countries and regions such as Australia, France and Japan.

Wendy Or, chairwoman of the Hong Kong Flower Show committee, said snapdragons were poised to play “a central role” in this year’s show.

“Fortunately they have intensely coloured flowers that bloom profusely in cooler weather,” she added.

The Hong Kong Observatory predicted temperatures would dip to single-digit readings on Friday in some parts of the city.

Or said a substantial number of flowers was also in the pipeline to replace dying ones when the low temperatures hit.
