Hong Kong fireworks show back for National Day, with hearts replacing controversial bullets

A 23-minute National Day fireworks display will be staged over Victoria Harbour tomorrow evening to mark the 66th anniversary of the People’s Republic of China.
The show will consist of nine scenes, with highlights including a bauhinia pattern in scene two as well as the five rings of the Winter Olympics in scene four to celebrate Beijing’s hosting the winter games in 2022.
Heart-shaped patterns and a text ‘LOL’ will appear in scene eight to be followed by a fast and rhythmic firing of shells running 28 seconds in the last scene.
A total of 23,888 fireworks, requiring about 4.5 tonnes of gunpowder, will be set off in the HK$8 million production.
The show will start at 9pm and can be viewed from both sides of the harbour.
Last year’s National Day fireworks show was cancelled due to Occupy Central protests.
