The South China Morning Post has alerted police after a website posted a fake news report purporting to be from the media company about cryptocurrency investment advice from Hong Kong billionaire Li Ka-shing.

A spokesman for the Post said: “We are aware of the situation and have reported it to police.”

He also advised readers to remain vigilant to avoid scams or phishing sites and reminded them the Post’s website was www.scmp.com.

The fake article claimed that Li had dropped a “bombshell” by saying he had made “millions from cryptocurrency auto-trading” during a TVB interview. The report showed a publishing date of April 17.

The website was designed to appear like the Post’s. The company did no publish any such report on that date.

A review of the TVB news reports on the same day also found no such story.
