Details have emerged about the identities of the two Cathay Pacific pilots who died in a horrific car crash in Kwai Chung.

Michael Tam Shiu-cheung, 28, and Ian Wong Yik, 27, were killed after their Porsche sports car spun out of control and crashed into a flyover before bursting into flames near the container terminal in Kwai Chung in the early hours of Thursday.

It is understood that Tam was working as a first officer with Cathay Pacific while Wong was a second officer. The first officer is second-in-command to the captain and the second officer is one grade below.

Both men were trained to fly Cathay's Boeing 777 fleet. The airline also has Boeing 747 and Airbus models in its fleet.

Police say the crash happened about 500 metres along Container Port Road South when the grey two-seater Porsche Cayman S being driven by Wong spun out of control just after 4.30am.
