If music be the food of love, then Hongkongers will be gorging on saccharine love ballads from the 1990s this Valentine's Day, according to popular music streaming service Spotify.

Nineties boy band 98 Degrees and American pop singer Pink topped the list as the most popular artists when it comes to making a playlist for the annual day of love.

And when it comes to a soundtrack for the bedroom, Hongkongers prefer something a bit more modern and laid-back with a 2009 minimalist electronic track by British indie group The xx as the top song for very intimate moments.

Spotify, which launched in Hong Kong in 2013, released the top 10 songs for three types of playlists that its local subscribers made: Valentine's, love and sex.

The top 10 songs in Hong Kong for a Valentine's playlist saw the 1998 song I Do (Cherish You) by 98 Degrees in pole position. The song featured in the soundtrack for the romantic comedy Notting Hill.
