Resident dies as fire sweeps through Tsuen Wan flat

A resident died and another was injured after fire ripped through a tenement flat which allegedly contained sub-divided units in Tsuen Wan on Thursday.

The victim’s charred body was found in a ground-floor subdivided unit at 14 Yi Pei Square after the fire started around 5.13am.

One man was taken to hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation and 50 other residents from the upper floors were evacuated.

The Fire Services Department said initial investigations showed there were no suspicious circumstances surrounding the blaze.

It is now investigating how the blaze started, and has referred the case to relevant government department to probe the suspected subdivided flats.

The gender of the victim remains unclear, the department said.
