A pedestrian was in stable condition after he plunged 3.8 metres yesterday into a deep hole that opened up suddenly in a Causeway Bay pavement next to a construction site.
The rare incident took place outside Ngan Lung Restaurant at Jardine's Bazaar at about 9am.
A government engineer said soil beneath the site had been washed away, causing the two-by-five-metre hole.
"From an initial investigation, we found the soil underneath the ground was gone," said Michael Chang Mein-kai, a senior engineer at the Civil Engineering and Development Department.
The man, 51, suffered injuries to his arms and legs, according to police. He was sent to Ruttonjee Hospital in Wan Chai and then transferred to Queen Mary Hospital in Pok Fu Lam.
The Buildings Department said it was investigating whether the accident was related to construction work nearby.
