Police are investigating whether an illegal car race was under way in Shek O early yesterday when four cars crashed, killing two men and injuring three others.
One of the drivers, 36, burned to death trapped inside his blazing vehicle on Shek O Road near To Tei Wan village, after a head-on collision with another of the cars at about 4.30am.
The second driver, 29, was also trapped in his car. He was freed by firefighters but declared dead at Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital in Chai Wan about an hour later.
The other two drivers, 26 and 34, were arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving causing death.
Police are looking into whether an illegal race was taking place at the time, a spokeswoman said.
Two of the four cars were going downhill towards Shek O Beach as the other two were in the next lane headed to Chai Wan, police said. The first two cars, going in opposite directions, smashed into each other just as they reached the village outskirts.
