Peter Hwang was half joking when he asked a buddy to set him up with one of her hot friends. Nevertheless, they decided to peruse her Facebook friends list.
"They are listed alphabetically, so it actually took me a while to get to Virginia's profile," Peter recalled. "But the moment I saw her photo, I knew I had found the right girl."
Peter, group general manager at investment company The Zuellig Group, and Virginia Wang, executive director of Goldman Sachs' private wealth management division, wed last Sunday at the Semara Luxury Villa Resort in Uluwatu, Bali.
The couple celebrated with 80 guests and danced into the night as fireworks and lanterns were launched into a star-studded sky.
"There are many memorable moments, but nothing beats when the celebrant declared us husband and wife, and that immense sense of love and belonging I felt rushing through my veins," Peter said.
The couple met in December 2008 when their mutual friend invited Virginia to dinner.
"As soon as I sat down for dinner my friend took off because of an 'emergency', leaving me alone with Peter for the whole night," said Virginia, who at the time had only been in Hong Kong a few weeks after relocating from her hometown, Shanghai.
Fortunately, she liked Peter straightaway. "He was so knowledgeable and yet very humble," she said.
That night, they talked about their favourite spots for hanging out in Shanghai and Hong Kong, and Peter offered to show Virginia around town.
On their next date, he took her around the hip backstreets of SoHo, which reminded her of Shanghai's French Concession.
"Peter knew I missed home so he looked up similar stylish alleys in Hong Kong and took me to a beautiful restaurant tucked away on Gough Street," she said. "The elegant, all-white interior could make any girl swoon and feel special. Our first date was warm, beautiful and very romantic."
After dating for a year, Virginia felt her life had become deeply entwined with Peter's. "Having lived by myself since law school, I'm quite independent. But since meeting Peter, I think I've consulted with him on almost everything I've planned, and he has done the same," Virginia said. "That's when I started thinking about spending the rest of my life with Peter."
In October 2010, Peter took Virginia to Shek O beach, where they had gone on their second date, with a plan to propose.
But they got there late and it was already dark so Peter opted for plan B, heading to their favourite restaurant in the village. But someone had stolen his thunder - the moment they opened the door, the diners began cheering a couple who had just got engaged.
"At that point I was feeling pretty desperate," Peter said. "So after dinner, I took Virginia to a dark, deserted alley in the village where I knew we wouldn't be disturbed, and I popped the question."
Virginia was worried that they'd get mugged, so instead of saying "yes" straight away, she said: "No, let's get out of here!"
"It was a most memorable proposal, but for all the wrong reasons," Peter said.
Still, Virginia knew she had found her prince charming.
"He gives me the most romantic, adventurous experiences, and all the love I will ever need," she said. "Most importantly, he is always there when I need him and handles me well when I'm stressed and upset. He has so much love for life, and appreciates both simple happiness and the finer things in life."
Peter said: "We both set high standards for what we want to achieve, which is very important to me as we start a family. We make great life partners because we naturally complement each other's strengths and weaknesses. I feel comfortable being myself around her, which always makes me wonder how she puts up with me."
The pair plan a honeymoon in South America next year.
