A school class in southwest China has thrown a party to celebrate the anniversary of the children deciding to take in and care for a homeless dog , a newspaper reported.

The pupils at the Chengdu Caotang Primary School have been looking after the dog for three years after it was found as a puppy on campus, the Chengdu Business News reported.

The fifth-grade pupils held a party for the dog called Xile, which means happiness and joy in Chinese, on Friday, the report said.

The pupils dressed the dog up, bought it a cake and sang songs for it, according to the article.

A teacher at the class was quoted as saying that the dog looked so sad but cute when it was found that she and her pupils found it difficult to drive it away from campus.

Pupils then asked the school authorities if they could care for it.
