A thick sandstorm has engulfed parts of the western Xinjiang region of China, forcing people to shelter indoors and leading to flight cancellations.

The dense sandstorm started on Saturday and swept through areas around Taklamakan desert in southwestern Xinjiang, the news website Chinanews.com reported.
Areas including Aksu, Kashgar and Hotan were affected, with the visibility down to only five metres in some parts, the report said.
A handicrafts exhibition in Aksu was cancelled on Saturday, while the storm also caused delays to train services.

Most flights to and from airports in Aksu and Kuqa county were cancelled on Sunday, the report said.
