A thief who broke into a home in southwest China apparently decided it was easier to cart off the owner’s safe – weighing a hefty 75kg – than try to crack it on the spot, mainland media reports.

The incident early on Thursday was captured by security cameras installed throughout the residential community in Nanning in the Guangxi autonomous region, according to Modern Life Daily.

Security footage shows the burglar exiting the first-floor flat with the safe, partially obscured by a blanket, loaded onto a trolley. He wheels it into the elevator, goes down to the ground floor and disappears.

The home owner, who was asleep at the time, said the safe contained about 10,000 yuan (US$1,515 or HK$11,770) in cash, jewellery and several business contracts, the report said.

At about the same time the safe was stolen, one of the thief’s accomplices broke into the home of another resident on the same floor and made off with a mobile phone and wallet.
