Hundreds of bottlenose dolphins have been spotted at a marine reserve in the South China Sea, according to a news website report.

It was the first time in five years that such a large group of dolphins had turned up in the area off the Nanpeng islands, Tencent News said.

Officials said the dolphins’ arrival reflected improved ecological conditions thanks to local residents’ growing awareness of environmental protection.

A fishing boat sailing into the reserve came across the dolphins on December 28, the report said.

Tourists on the fishing boat took photographs and videos of the mammals.
