A Chinese subway commuter has asked police to release CCTV footage to clear his name after online rumours claimed he had tarnished the mainland’s reputation by fighting with another passenger in Beijing as a foreigner tried to stop them.

An online post went viral last week, purportedly showing two Beijing commuters fighting at a subway station as a foreigner tried to intervene, the Beijing Youth Daily reported.

Internet users lambasted the two men for their poor manners.

However, one of the commuters, identified only by his surname, Li, told the newspaper that the fight started because he spoke up for the foreigner after the other mainland commuter pushed the foreigner as they entered the crowded subway train at peak hour.

Li said he was upset after he saw the mainland passenger rudely push the foreigner off the train.

He had called out to the mainlander and was surprised to see the passenger get off the train and push him to the ground, he said.
