Staff at the library in the coastal resort of Beidaihe in northern Hebei province said nearly 2,000 people visited on Saturday, the news website Sina.com reported.

The building was designed to handle about 80 readers at a time.

The library became a hit online in recent weeks after pictures of the concrete building were posted on the internet.

It is several hundred metres away from the nearest road, the state-run news agency Xinhua reported.
