A Chinese driver was fined and lost his licence after breaking the 120km/h speed limit 21 times in the past 18 months after misreading his car's speedometer, news website Cqcb.com reports.

When police caught restaurant owner Tang Wusi speeding at 192km/h this month, they found he had outstanding fines on 20 earlier speeding tickets dating back 18 months.

Tang, from Chongqing, told the city’s transport police that he had never knowingly speeded - even when shown that speed cameras had recorded him regularly driving his imported Lincoln MKT SUV at speeds of up to 195km/h.

He claimed the car, which had cost him more than 1.6 million yuan (HK$2 million), was his pride and joy so he was careful to stick to the speedometer's reading of 120km/h.

He said he drove the car only when going to important business meetings with clients.

Police solved the mystery after checking inside his car and found the American car’s speedometer used larger numbers for speeds in miles per hour, and small numbers for those in km/h; Tang had been following the speedometer reading of 120mp/h which converts to 193km/h.
