A woman from eastern China who had divorced her husband with a criminal record was hacked around the head and neck by her former spouse with a kitchen knife, according to a news website report.

The woman, 43, was assaulted at the food stall where she worked in Wenzhou in Zhejiang province on Sunday evening, the website Zjol.com.cn said.

She is in intensive care and is said to be in a stable condition in hospital.

The husband fled and police are looking for him, according to the report.

Her family said he started taking drugs after the couple got married about a decade ago.

She filed for divorce after he got out of prison in 2013. He had served one year in jail for theft.
