When Betty Sun, a master’s student from the northern Chinese port city of Dalian, got infected with Covid-19 late last month, she was not so surprised that she had contracted the virus as much as how persistent her four days of high fever was.

“I knew it would be hard to stay away from the virus, but it turned out to be a bit different from my impression,” she said.

The 23-year-old said she had expected the symptoms to be less severe, since there had always been a large proportion of “asymptomatic” cases reported by the government.

Anna Xi, a 22-year-old resident of the southern city of Guangzhou, had a similar experience and wrote about her Covid-19 symptoms on Xiaohongshu, the Chinese version of Instagram.

“I endured three days of high fever with an ibuprofen tablet a day, but I really can’t deal with the ‘knife-cutting’ kind of pain in my throat,” said Xi ,who ended up seeking medical treatment.
