America’s top diplomat in Beijing struck an optimistic note on bilateral ties on Tuesday, telling a closed-door gathering in Hong Kong that risks in the relationship had been controlled effectively and talks were under way for a potential Boeing deal, sources told the South China Morning Post.

Sources who were present as David Perdue, the US ambassador to China, spoke at the Goldman Sachs Global Macro Conference Asia-Pacific 2026, said his message was “comforting and reassuring” to global business and finance leaders concerned about the trade and investment links between the world’s top two economies.

The closed-door appearance before hundreds of international finance heads marked Perdue’s first trip to Hong Kong since taking over as US ambassador on May 15, as the Post first reported earlier this month.

Perdue said the risks in US-China relations had been effectively controlled and the broader relationship had “improved multidimensionally” since Chinese President Xi Jinping met his US counterpart Donald Trump in South Korea in October, according to three participants at the event who declined to be named.

“Ambassador Perdue called it a remarkable achievement in the diplomacy between the two heads of state,” one of them said.

A second attendee said: “Overall, he seems to be optimistic about US-China relations this year as he also mentioned that Trump and Xi will meet multiple times this year.

“It is comforting and reassuring for the business and finance leaders attending the event. The world is seeing a drastic rise in geopolitical risk. We badly need stability in China-US relations.”
