The person entered the mainland on Sunday and arrived in Shanghai the next day by high-speed train from the southern city of Zhuhai in Guangdong province, according to the Shanghai health commission.
Guangdong authorities alerted Shanghai on Wednesday about the suspected illegal crossing and Shanghai officials isolated the person, who then tested positive for the coronavirus.
More than 15,000 people had been tested and 550 environmental samples related to the case collected as of Friday morning, with all samples returning negative, according to Shanghai authorities.
Southern China has been on high alert since two people from Hong Kong were arrested for crossing the border illegally and tested positive for Covid-19.
