Guangdong needs to forge closer integration with Hong Kong and Macau this year as it seeks to transform the region into a world-class hub for innovation, technology and talent, according to the leadership of the southern Chinese province.
Addressing a conference on Thursday to promote the Greater Bay Area, Guangdong Communist Party boss Li Xi said 2022 was an important year for China in building a modern socialist country.
“It is also a critical year … for the building of the Greater Bay Area … and [we must] seize the opportunity to press ahead in building it as a world leading bay and urban cluster,” provincial media quoted Li as saying.
The Greater Bay Area is a central government scheme to link Hong Kong, Macau and nine cities in Guangdong into an integrated economic and business hub.
As part of the push, Li urged cadres to give priority to Qianhai and Hengqin, two border areas selected to pilot reforms especially in finance and technology.
He also outlined four other focuses for the coming year: attracting global talent; deepening infrastructure cooperation with Hong Kong and Macau; promoting people-to-people exchanges; and working closely with the two cities in pandemic prevention and control.
