A former Chinese envoy to Seoul has called for more efforts to help young people engage after a survey suggested many South Korean students believe they lack comprehensive information on China.

The survey on China and its relationship with South Korea was sent to about 100 young South Koreans, mostly students, in the past year. They were taking part in an essay contest organised by state-run publishing group China International Communications Group (CICG) Asia-Pacific, the Chinese embassy in Seoul and Yanbian University.

Presenting the survey results at an awards ceremony in Beijing on Friday, Wang Zhongyi, editor-in-chief of CICG Asia-Pacific, said the poll found that young South Koreans mainly relied on local media reports or Chinese friends for information about China.

But he said most believed media coverage of China was not comprehensive, according to official magazine China Report on Monday.

Wang was quoted as saying that about 60 per cent of respondents thought the media portrayal of China was worse than their image of the country.

He said only about 20 per cent agreed that the media portrayal of China and of South Korean-Chinese relations was “fair and objective”.
