People’s Liberation Army generals have, on average, lost more than 5kg in weight as they practise marching in preparation for next month’s massive military parade in Beijing.

The September 3 event, celebrating the 70th anniversary of the end of the second world war, will feature a parade of 12,000 soldiers led by more than 50 generals.

Beijing military area command vice-chief of staff Wang Shun told Xinhua that the generals, aged between 53 and 58, were all commanders of troops and of high standing among their peers in the military.

Wang said these generals, including major generals and lieutenant generals, ate at the same table and endured the same conditions as the soldiers while training together for the parade. The event will feature at least 500 pieces of military equipment – much of it never before seen in public – including advanced weaponry and a display by more than 200 fighter aircraft.
