A gas blast at a luxury apartment in the southern Chinese city of Shenzhen caused a major fire that spread to several floors in the complex on Wednesday afternoon.
Emergency crews raced to the scene to evacuate residents and tackle the blaze, which was fully put out three hours after it started at 3pm.
The accident resulted in one fatality, with no other injuries reported. Authorities are continuing to investigate the cause of the incident.
Earlier medical personnel confirmed that one person had fallen from the building.
Eyewitnesses said a woman appeared to have fallen out of a window after losing consciousness in a harrowing scene captured on video.
Rescue teams began evacuating residents through a platform on the fifth floor, which provides access to the residential areas.
By late afternoon, they had searched floors 5 through to 41, successfully evacuating four residents, all of whom were conscious and stable.
The fire started on the 28th floor of Shenzhen Bay Yuefu Phase II, one of the city’s most exclusive addresses.


The city’s fire department said it had sent 16 fire engines and 80 firefighters to the scene.
Firecrews used aerial ladders to combat the fire, which had spread to four or five floors.
Firefighters reported that flames on the 27th, 28th and 29th floors had been extinguished around an hour after the fire started.
However, the fire continued to burn on the 30th floor and firefighters set up containment barriers on the floor above to stop it spreading further before the blaze was finally extinguished at around 6pm.
Two floors suffered severe damage, with their exteriors almost completely charred, while others saw varying degrees of damage.
Witnesses reported hearing loud explosions after the blaze started. The section of South Keyuan Road near MixC Shopping Mall Shenzhen was closed as rescuers arrived at the scene.
Shenzhen Bay Yuefu Phase II is developed and managed by state-owned enterprise China Resources Group.

One-bedroom flats in the block cost the equivalent of around US$2 million.
Official data shows that in the first eight months of this year, there were 36,000 high-rise building fires in China, surpassing the total for all of 2023. These fires claimed 203 lives.
Two major high-rise fires this year have claimed more than a dozen lives. One in February killed 15 people and injured 44 at a residential block in Nanjing.
In July a fire at a shopping mall in Zigong city in Sichuan resulted in 16 deaths and 29 injuries.
The increase in fatal fires this year prompted the China Fire and Rescue Force to start a public education campaign in September to highlight the risk and tell people to take precautions.

In recent weeks, as temperatures have dropped across much of China, there has been a rise in fires in residential high-rises, often caused by electric blankets or heaters, although most of these have not proved fatal.
In response, the Ministry of Emergency Management has conducted numerous safety campaigns, particularly targeting the elderly and children.
