Woman survives China building collapse after 6 days trapped in rubble
- 10th survivor of disaster was able to guide rescuers as they pulled her to safety soon after midnight
- The partial collapse of the ‘self-built’ building killed at least five, with possibly dozens still missing
State media reported on Thursday that the unidentified woman was rescued soon after midnight, about 132 hours after the rear of the six-story building caved in on Friday. At least five people were killed and an unknown number – possibly dozens – are still missing.
The woman, the 10th survivor of the disaster, was conscious and able to tell rescuers how to pull her out without causing further injury, according to state news agency Xinhua.
The rescue teams used dogs and hand tools as well as drones and electronic life detectors in the search.
At least nine people have been arrested in relation to the collapse of what Xinhua has described as a “self-built building”, including its owner, on suspicion of ignoring building codes or committing other violations.
Also held were three people in charge of design and construction and five others who allegedly gave a false safety assessment for a guest house on the building’s fourth to sixth floors.
