Long a staple in mainland China, group and tour packages remain popular for families and leisure travel to Sanya.

Tour packages are designed to make a trip less stressful and tend to be favoured by families and newer travellers.

“It’s a mix of families, couples and friends who book a package through an agent and families who book packages directly with us,” says Stephan Stoss, general manager of the Hilton Sanya Yalong Bay Resort and Spa and Hainan South Cluster general manager.

Guests are attracted by the discounts and add-on goodies that often accompany package deals. “We offer welcome gifts like a Hilton sports bag with an inflatable ball, a junior fishing rod for our lake … and discounts in the restaurant,” Stoss adds.

The details of a tour package vary widely and tend to be geared towards certain travel categories. “We are promoting our family packages at next month’s opening, to attract families with children from infants to 12 years old,” says Timothy Bruce, general manager, Grand Hyatt Sanya Haitang Bay Resort
and Spa.

Other popular package categories include “romance packages for couples, meeting packages for small- to medium-sized meetings, and wedding packages that include a ceremony and dinner”, Bruce notes.
