The appearance in Shanghai of the diamond-embedded supercar seen flying between buildings in the trailer for the new high-octane Hollywood action film Fast & Furious 7 set off a social media storm on the mainland on Monday.

Photographs of the limited edition Lykan HyperSport, which were taken at Shanghai Pudong International Airport, were rapidly shared on social media app WeChat and the mainland's Twitter-like microblog service.

Images of the luxury supercar, with a top speed of 385 km/h, showed its headlights, which have a row of diamonds embedded inside.

Including taxes and other costs, the Lykan HyperSport supercar, built by Lebanese carmaker W Motors could expect to attract a price of the 90 million yuan (HK$114 million) if sold in China.

Only seven of the supercars will be manufactured, and it is still uncertain where they will go on sale - or just who will be able to buy one.

W Motors did not respond to queries yesterday from the South China Morning Post.
