The nation's largest manufacturer of electronic toilet seats insists Chinese products are just as good as those from Japan after Chinese tourists were reported to be snapping up the seats with multiple flushing and washing features in Japanese stores.

Electronic toilet seats have recently become one of the most sought-after commodities on Chinese consumers' shopping lists when they visit Japan.

State-owned China Central Television reported last month that the seats, which are priced at about 2,000 yuan (HK$2,500) each, were sold out in many duty-free shops in Japan after Chinese tour groups visited those places.

Some even purchased two or three such products in one go, apparently believing Japanese-made products are better in quality than those made at home.

The news is both good and a bad for China's largest maker of the seats, Xian Sanhua Ryoji Electrical Appliances.

"This is an excellent opportunity to let more people know what an intelligent toilet seat is," said Ma Yue, general manager of the company in Xian , Shaanxi province .
