Two residents in a village in Dongyuan, Guangdong whom the police originally said died after being struck by lightning turned out to have been shot to death, allegedly by a family member.
The New Express, a local newspaper, reported that Yang Caiying, was found lying on the porch of her nephew’s house on July 24 after she had been hanging clothes to dry and after thunder had been heard in the area.
The nephew, Luo Guiqian, and his wife, Yuan Hongdi, found Yang’s body and decided to take her to the closest hospital. However, when Luo started his motorcycle, he heard another loud noise.
“I thought it was thunder again. But when I turned back, both my wife and aunt were lying on the ground with their heads bleeding,” Luo said. He was then shot in the back but not seriously injured.
“I suddenly realised this sound is not thunder, but gun shots,” Luo said.
Yuan and Yang died as Luo was taking them to the hospital, he said.
A villager who was trying to help him was shot as well.
The village hospital issued a statement saying Yang and Yuan had died of electric shock and the bodies would be cremated, Luo told the newspaper.
“Before the facts cleared, we [would not] agree to cremate the bodies,” said Luo.
After a postmortem examination insisted on by the families, the municipal public security bureau on September 3 declared that the two had been shot dead, not hit by lightning.
Luo Guiqian’s cousin, Luo Guixin, was detained in connection with the shootings. Police said they found two homemade muskets at his residence.
