When lorry driver A. Suresh stopped by the roadside in Malaysia’s Negeri Sembilan state last Thursday to check his vehicle, he never imagined he would be fighting for his life against a wild panther.

The attack, which left him with over 30 stitches to his head, shook the 54-year-old from Klang, Selangor, to his core.

“Until now, I still can’t sleep well because I keep having nightmares of the leopard attacking me. I don’t even know where it came from, but it was really shocking and frightening,” Suresh told the Sinar Harian newspaper on Monday.

The father of two, who was discharged from Tuanku Jaafar Hospital after three days of treatment, was on his way back to Kuala Lumpur after delivering chicken feed in Jelebu when he pulled over near Bukit Tangga to check his lorry and relieve himself.

“While I was washing my hands, [it] jumped onto me and tried to bite my head, but I managed to push a water bottle into its mouth,” he said. “If I hadn’t, I would definitely be dead.”

Suresh’s quick thinking may have saved his life, but it was a passing vehicle that ultimately came to his rescue. The driver of the vehicle stopped to assist and contacted emergency services.
