Aloysius Pang, who starred in Chinese-language television shows and movies, was completing compulsory reservist training when he suffered serious injuries to his chest and abdomen while repairing artillery.

He had been working on a Singapore Self-Propelled Howitzer, a motorised piece of artillery that looks similar to a small tank. The live-firing training exercise took place at the Waiouru training area on New Zealand’s North Island and is hosted by New Zealand’s military each year.

After the accident, the 28-year-old was transferred to hospital and underwent surgery.

“Despite surgical attempts to repair damaged organs and putting him on artificial life support ... Pang succumbed to the injuries and passed away,” Singapore’s defence ministry said in a statement late on Wednesday.

The ministry said an inquiry would be set up to investigate Pang’s death.

Male Singapore citizens are required to undergo two years of national service upon turning 18 and are also called up for further training in the following years. Pang had completed his full-time service, and was an armament technician whose rank was corporal first class.
