Khan’s lawyer Khawaja Harris announced that the trial would not go ahead.
The court was supposed to indict opposition leader Khan, who was ousted by parliament last year through a vote of no confidence, for several charges of corruption including one for stealing expensive state gifts from other countries.
The process was unable to begin however, as Khan’s supporters attacked police at the entrance of the judicial building.
The conviction may lead to Khan’s disqualification from holding any public office in future as well as a prison sentence of up to three years.
The former premier’s supporters threw stones, petrol bombs and pieces of bricks at police guarding the courtroom, creating a situation in which Khan’s absence from court was justified.
The court hearing has been moved to March 30, said a court official.
