The world’s oldest person, Misao Okawa, died in Japan today, a month after celebrating her 117th birthday.
Okawa reportedly died of heart failure. She breathed her last at around 7am local time, surrounded by nursing home officials and her grandson, who praised her for achieving a long life.
“She went so peacefully, as if she had just fallen asleep,” said Tomohiro Okada, a nursing home official. “We miss her a lot.”
The nursing home’s management said Okawa lost her appetite about 10 days ago. Until then, she had been eating well, enjoying her daily cup of coffee and her favourite dishes, including ramen, Okada said.
On her birthday early last month, Okawa, a mother of three, grandmother of four and great-grandmother of six, was one of only a handful of people still alive who had been born in the 19th century.
But Okawa, the daughter of a kimono maker, when asked about her life during her birthday party, said: "It seemed rather short."
