5 things you should know about Naomi Scott, Princess Jasmine in Disney’s 2019 Aladdin remake

It has been nearly three decades since the blockbuster animated film Aladdin was released in 1992.
Disney’s 2019 live-action adaptation of the same name was released on May 24 internationally and has done wonders at the box office.
According to Box Office Mojo, the musical has raked in more than US$454 million (as of June 5) worldwide and is the third-highest grossing movie in the United States this year, beaten only by Avengers: Endgame (US$815 million) and Captain Marvel (US$426 million).
Directed by Guy Ritchie, the musical has achieved widespread critical acclaim, thanks to the spellbinding performances of Will Smith, Mena Massoud, Naomi Scott and Marwan Kenzari.

1. She is of Indian and British descent

Born and raised in London, the 26-year-old’s mother is from Uganda and of Gujarati Indian descent, while her father is British. An Instagram post, in which she is dressed in traditional Indian attire, shows how proud she is of her Indian roots.
However, when the cast for the remake of Aladdin was revealed in 2017, critics slammed Disney for not choosing an Arab actress to portray Princess Jasmine.
The role is based on the princess who appears in the Middle Eastern folk tale collection One Thousand and One Nights.
