The Korean singing sensation, who successfully went solo after her 11-member girl group I.O.I. disbanded in 2017, swept TV pop shows in January with her latest track

K-pop artist Chungha took over Korean TV music charts this week, topping on three networks in the second week of January with her latest number, Gotta Go.

The solo artist topped Show Champion on MBC Music on January 9, M Countdown on Mnet on January 10, and Show Music Core on MBC on Saturday.

Chungha (real name Kim Chan-mi), who was one of the 11 members of the now-defunct all-girl band I.O.I., released Gotta Go this month. MNH Entertainment, the singer’s agency, launched the track following her success in 2017-18 with songs such as Hands on Me, Rollercoaster and Love U.

The singer, who is fluent in English, studied in Texas, US, before making her name on the K-pop television audition show Produce 101 on Mnet in 2016. She was among the 11 winners who later made their debut as the band I. O. I, which lasted a year.

Alongside Sunmi and Hyolin, 22-year-old Chungha is considered one of the few female solo K-pop artists whose credits are built on solid singing and excellent dancing skills.

Solo acts by former band stalwarts are a growing trend. Jennie from girl band BLACKPINK recently made her solo debut, with three other members expected to follow suit later this year.
