The director – best known for the hit 2016 Iran-Bollywood film Salaam Mumbai (Hello Mumbai) which he also wrote – is one of Iran’s most recognised filmmakers and screenwriters.

Mohammadpour attempted to contact Lee with the help of the Iranian embassy before finally meeting her.

Yet it is unclear whether the actress will appear in her first foreign film since making her acting debut in 1990.

Lee starred in the hit television drama series Dae Jang Geum, also known as “Jewel in the Palace”, in 2004.

The series propelled her to stardom, making her a leading “hallyu”, or “Korean wave” celebrity.
