The Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, rescheduled due to Covid-19, will finally start on July 23. And just as we all have to watch the games from the virtual sidelines, we are likewise style spotting digitally, too.
From the opening and closing ceremony outfits to the official uniforms to be donned by the national athletes, American designer Ralph Lauren, British label Ben Sherman, and other top fashion brands from around the world, are making sure their home country’s athletes arrive looking their best.

Designed by Tokyo 2020 sponsor Aoki, the Japanese Olympians and Paralympians will be wearing official uniforms at the opening ceremony that pay tribute to the outfits their team wore at the first Tokyo Games in 1964.

Bearing the colours of the Japanese flag, the clothes are unisex and can be tailor-fit according to every athlete’s specifications. Designed with sustainability in mind, they are made using environmentally friendly plant-based fibres and have features that protect the wearer against the heat.
On the Tokyo 2020 Instagram, it was also unveiled that Asics is making the official kits for the team’s athletes. These likewise bear the colours of the Japanese flag.
The US
Proudly made in America, Ralph Lauren has designed the American Olympic and Paralympic teams’ closing ceremony uniforms. David Lauren, chief innovation and branding officer and vice-chairman of the board, notes via the brand’s Instagram account that the necessity to “embrace our responsibility to protect the planet we call home” means they have invested in ways to make the uniforms more sustainable.

Likewise, Kim Kardashian’s Skims becomes the first-ever loungewear brand to dress the national team. Skims will be providing underwear, loungewear and pyjamas for the American team’s women athletes.
