Barbiecore or “Barbie energy” (as the film’s writer and director Greta Gerwig calls it) is shaping up to become the biggest trend of 2023. Searches for Barbie are up 90 per cent on Pinterest while #barbiecore has had over 550 million views on TikTok.

Though the trend itself is not exactly new, just like the doll of the hour has evolved over the last 64 years, Barbiecore today is a pretty-in-pink juggernaut.

Former Moschino designer Jeremy Scott, in particular, shone the spotlight on the style in the fashion world. He paid homage to the plastic princess with his spring/summer 2015 collection, featuring two-piece sets embellished with “Moschino” in the distinctive Barbie cursive font. When asked about his inspiration for the collection, the trendsetter said backstage, “Like every girl and gay boy, I loved Barbie. It’s hard not to, she’s practically perfect.”
