STYLE Edit: Chanel’s Comète jewellery collection recalls founder’s fascination with comets and stars

A dazzling line of earrings, necklaces, rings and bracelets revolving around a five-point design have been crafted out of 18-ct white gold and studded with diamonds and pearls
Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel was intrigued by stars and comets. As a child, every morning she would walk across a long corridor paved with polished pebbles arranged in geometric patterns with five-pointed stars. These memories inspired the theme of her first jewellery collection, Bijoux de Diamants, in Paris in 1932.

Chanel, who loved costume jewellery, created this collection of 35 pieces with authentic diamonds to revitalise the jewellery market during the Great Depression. “If I have chosen diamonds, it is because they represent the greatest value in the smallest volume … I wanted to cover women with constellations. Stars! Stars of all sizes,” she said.

Over the years, comets and stars have been an integral part of Chanel’s design sensibilities and in this latest collection, the famed motifs have been reinterpreted to present a dazzling line of earrings, necklaces, rings and bracelets. Revolving around a five-point design, the Comète jewellery pieces have been crafted out of 18ct white gold and studded with diamonds and pearls. Right from the chic ear cuff to the delicate comet necklace, which combines yellow gold, white gold and diamonds in a brilliant form of two shooting stars, the Comète collection makes a distinct style statement.

A symbol of beauty, movement and freedom, the five-pointed shape “best highlights the sparkle of diamonds,” Chanel says. Contemporary yet rooted in Chanel’s eight-decade-long legacy, the Comète collection offers a sleek bracelet which can be worn with bold, two-tone diamond earrings. The celestial theme runs through various pieces, such as the rings offered in three variants – a shooting star “charm ring” in 18ct white gold and diamonds, a star ring in 18ct white gold, diamonds and cultured pearls, and a two star diamond-studded ring, which can also work as statement jewellery on its own.

The star and comet theme remains one of the most alluring motifs from the house of Chanel alongside the lion and the camellia. You can wear these graceful pieces to work on weekdays or pair them with classy cocktail dresses over weekends. The perfect gift to dazzle women with a weakness for sparkling diamonds, the Comète fine jewellery collection is romantic and a poignant reminder of Chanel’s role as a game-changer in the 1930s.
