President Donald Trump’s nominee Lori Chávez-DeRemer is a step closer to becoming the next labour secretary after receiving a bipartisan vote of 14-9 from the Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) Committee on the morning of February 27.

Democratic senators Maggie Hassan, John Hickenlooper and Tim Kaine joined 10 Republicans in voting in favour of Chávez-DeRemer. Senator Rand Paul was the only Republican to vote no.

As Chávez-DeRemer’s nomination advances to a full Senate vote, here’s a look at her husband, Shawn Michael DeRemer, who has stood by her side through her political career.

DeRemer is an anaesthesiologist based in Portland, Oregon. He attended the St. George’s University School of Medicine from 1992 to 1996, and completed his anaesthesiology residency at the University of Michigan Medical School in 2000.

He has been president and executive medical director at Portland-based Anesthesia Associates Northwest for nearly 20 years.

He is Lori Chávez-DeRemer’s childhood sweetheart
