Karla Sofía Gascón says she will not withdraw from Oscar contention, despite facing backlash for her controversial social media posts which recently resurfaced in the media, according to CNN.
The Emilia Pérez star, 52, made history last month as the first openly transgender actress to be nominated for an Oscar in an acting category. She is currently in the race for best actress. “I cannot step down from an Oscar nomination because I have not committed any crime nor have I harmed anyone. I am neither racist nor anything that all these people have tried to make others believe I am,” Gascón told CNN.
Gascón’s shocking tweets were uncovered via screenshots shared by journalist Sarah Hagi on X. The old social media posts included Gascón’s critiques of Muslim culture, the death of George Floyd – calling him a “scammer drug addict” – as well as the Oscars. “The #Oscars are increasingly resembling an independent and vindictive film awards ceremony, I didn’t know if I was watching an Afro-Korean festival, a Black Lives Matter demonstration, or March 8th,” Gascón wrote of the latter’s 2021 ceremony.
“It’s so insane that Karla Sofía Gascón still has these tweets up. straight up have never seen tweets this racist from someone actively campaigning to win an Academy Award. There are more than a dozen,” Hagi wrote in her caption alongside the screenshots. Gascón’s X account has since been deactivated.
“I want to address the conversation around my past social media posts that have caused harm,” Gascón said in a statement shared with CNN. “As a member of a marginalised community, I know this suffering all too well and deeply regret having caused pain. All my life I have fought for a better world. I believe that light will always triumph over darkness.”
