Halls is a veteran Hollywood PR guru who recently opened up about losing his friends to Aids, and his advice to help gay actors come out

Actor Matt Bomer’s husband Simon Halls may be known as a veteran PR guru in the entertainment world, but he’s also been an important figure in Hollywood’s LGBTQ+ community. Now he’s opening up about his experiences of supporting celebrities to come out of the closet on their own terms over the years.

“I came of age in my personal and professional life at a time when Aids, that other pandemic, also came of age,” he wrote in a story for The Hollywood Reporter this month. “Those were scary times. You couldn’t be your true self back then and if you tried, chances are the virus would find you.”

He also recounted the story of one actor who was scared of being asked about his sexuality in interviews because he was starring in a gay themed project and wasn’t ready to come out. “My response was that in a perfect world, the ideal would be something like this: A New York Times feature that covers your projects, resume, history and some of your life, and then in the 17th paragraph, it is written that you live in New York with your partner/husband/wife, children or dogs. Something as simple as that is the goal,” he shared.

The actor in question reportedly later introduced him to his future husband, White Collar’s Matt Bomer. Halls also said in the piece that Ellen DeGeneres was an “an absolute hero” and commented how different Hollywood is today compared to how it was before.

According to his profile on the USC Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism website, Simon Halls is founder and partner at Slate PR, the entertainment industry’s leading PR agency. It adds that he has over 450 clients.
