- Released on Friday to much fanfare, Swift’s new album The Tortured Poets Department is speculated to be centred around her break-up with British actor Joe Alwyn, who she dated for 6 years
- The album title is rumoured to be a reference to her ex, who once shared that he has a WhatsApp chat called ‘The Tortured Man Club’ with actors Andrew Scott and Phoebe Bridgers’ ex Paul Mescal
It’s hard to fathom how Taylor Swift, a newly minted billionaire and America’s musical sweetheart, has managed to record an entire album – with 31 tracks, no less – all while keeping busy with her record-breaking world tour, love life with Travis Kelce, and attending events in support of her long-time friends.
But when inspiration calls, Swift answers. Thankfully.
Released on April 19 to much fanfare, The Tortured Poets Department is Swift’s first collection of new songs since October 2022’s Midnights. Ahead of its launch, Swifties were already speculating that the album would likely be centred around her break-up with British actor Joe Alwyn, who she dated for six years. It’s believed they split up in early 2023.

Songs like “So Long, London” seem to hint at her former relationship with Alwyn, as they spent a lot of time in the big smoke, while the album title itself is rumoured to be a potential reference to her ex, who once shared in an interview with Variety that he has a WhatsApp chat called “The Tortured Man Club” with actors Andrew Scott and Phoebe Bridgers’ ex Paul Mescal.

Although Swift has a strict policy to never reveal the identity of the people she writes songs about, Swifties are on it when it comes to deciphering her lyrics – and sharing their theories with fellow fans.
Let’s take a look at what Alwyn has been up to lately.
