US football club Inter Miami CF is fast becoming one of the sport’s most popular teams worldwide thanks to its A-list co-owner David Beckham and popular players like Lionel Messi. Playing in the Eastern Conference of the Major League Soccer competition, their all-pink strip has quickly become one of the most desirable in all of football.

But their popularity backfired last month when the team played a friendly game in Hong Kong during Tatler Xfest, a sport and music event organised by the lifestyle brand Tatler Asia. Fans from across the region splashed out big bucks to see their idols in action, but were left severely disappointed when Messi, one of the football world’s biggest stars, failed to take to the field, blaming an injury for his no-show.

The incident caused uproar in Asia and made headlines around the world, with Messi himself eventually apologising to fans on Weibo. Organisers scrambled to resolve the situation, eventually offering 50 per cent refunds on tickets bought through official channels.
